The ongoing adventures of Fidget and Twitch

April 14th, 2005

Somewhere in Western Ontario every June there is a frisbee event of mythic proportions. I would name it but then I would call unwanted attention to my little corner of the blogsphere. To protect the notion of privacy that I’ve created here let’s call the event GB. GB involves drinking, carousing, dancing, dressing up and more carousing. General debauchery all around. It’s held in a lovely, little town called Ferg*s.

Ferg*s offers up a lovely sports complex complete with camping facilities, washrooms and showers. The revellers take over, put up some large white tents and turn the music up. Next thing you know a party erupts.

Fidget and Twitch have made regular pilgrimages to this frisbee festival for many years now.

One year Fidget got really ballsy and called the organizers ahead of time to arrange some entertainment during the festivities. Fidget is me by the way.

I spent the weekend in a FOG of blue, met some folks from all over the Eastern Seabord and fell madly in love. Here’s how that happened………

Early Saturday evening I showered and blew out my curly orange hair, laid on the electric blue eyeshadow and poured myself into a 3 dolla Giant Tiger polyester dress. Twitch was out cold due to a day spent running around in panties. Nowhere to be found was our intrepid Twitch. No worries I said as I got my post show ensemble of a pair of torn jeans and see thru hippie shirt together for later, she’ll show up soon enough.

After a wonderful dinner of forgettable foodstuffs and banjo music, the night started to heat up and the show was underway. I was to host the evening’s entertainment, the Dating Game, and I had to get all my questions prepared and choose my prey. Earlier in the day I had seen this tall, dark, handsome American on an opposing team and asked a girl on the sideline about him. She was pretty outgoing too so I decided to make her one of the contestants for the guy’s round. He was hot. All the other contestants are a blur to me now because from the moment I pulled him out of the audience I was a goner.

I gave him all my special, funny answers and he had the crowd in the palm of his hand. He also won the heart of the masked bachelorette. That part over, I moved on with the Bachelor choosing his girl and then on to judging the dance contest. Such a fun night so far.

The dance contest completed, the music was turned down for a moment to honour a friend lost in the Towers on 9/11. We all stood still in the dark to listen to her sister tell us of her courage and personality. Many were crying. Not enough were moved though because, at that moment, I felt some hands on my hips and a chin on my shoulder. I turned slightly to get the full hit of Molson in my face and was repulsed by what I found standing behind me, touching me. Somehow I had scored a leech of a man and I started to panic. I looked around me crazily and saw, with much relief that tall dark and handsome was not far off. I waved at him and drew his attention, mouthing “help me”. He came to my rescue, took my hand and whisked me away from the dreaded, smelly man.

What wonderful few moments those were. I remember playing leap frog out of the tent when the police showed up to shut down our party. I was wearing torn jeans and a fuschia thong. Wouldn’t any man fall in love with a woman who’s fuschia thong is showing through her torn jeans? Specially when It’s paired with a fuschia padded underwire bra that’s peeking out of a see through tunic. Oh, I was a dream. And so was he.

We escaped to the rugby fields and played splendour in the grass until someone turned the headlights of a car on us. There were spectators in the bleachers too, unbeknownst to me. I found out later they liked my style. I never did find my earrings.

We talked all night, moved from campsite to campsite listening to music and then to his tent. All the campers in the vicinity knew what was going on. No one got much sleep.

The next day we spent time together but, as often been the story in my life, he got into a vehicle and drove off. We had exchanged phone numbers and the next two weeks were the most wonderful I’ve ever known.

We’d would talk late into the night, chat and share photos by email all day long. It was a wonderful period of bliss. Two people finding out they had so much in common and were terribly, terribly attracted to each other on all levels. One of the high points, apart from the much maligned phone sex, was the decision on his part that he could not wait to see me again; that we must again meet sooner rather than later. A date and time were set. A hotel midway between our respective homes was chosen and off we went. No two people have only had a marginally better weekend. Bad things happened but nothing marred our two days together. I got fired from my job, it rained in Vermont and I had my period but all in all, it was a fantastic weekend.

He had picked a hotel with a games room and a pool. It was situated beside a rushing brook and there were many lovely restaurants around. We got our first meal at the gas station though, because I arrived so late, all the places were closed. Nacho chips and salsa with red wine have never tasted better.

So many romantic moments, I can barely list them all. One that will always stick out in my mind was courtesy of the Inn Keeper. There wasn’t a lot of business in this ski resort town in mid June. We were a young couple coming together for the weekend and I guess my love had mentioned my name and appearance to the man at the desk when he arrived. He had been there two hours by the time I got there and was waiting patiently in our room. I swooped down the stairs and through the huge wooden door into the lobby, heart aflutter, to be greeted by ” Hello Lauren, Joel is waiting for you.”.

I must have looked surprised because he made some mention of how I could only be Lauren with my long dark curly hair. And, as it occurred to me later, he wasn’t really expecting anyone else at that time of night, but he knew my name and I was touched. He gave me my room key and directions and I pulled my pick-up around the back to the little room by the brook. Joel heard me and opened the door to run and met me in the rain. What a heavenly connection we had. And gawd he was gorgeous.

The story doesn’t have a happy ending for me but it was one of the best weekends of my life and, for a moment, I knew that everyone has someone out there who is their perfect match. Making it last was beyond me but at least I believe.

Edited to add- tomorrow is Twitch’s 30th birthday. Hippo Birdy Two Ewe dahlink

Hello Michele sent me! I loved the story that you just wrote. I’ve been married for 14 years to my soul mate and many of our first meetings were as you described. I miss the spontaneity of being single and hanging on to the last kiss, breath, etc. However, 16 years later, I love him more than I did the day that I met him and that love grows stronger every day!

Lala, I knew it was only a matter of time before your loyal fans heard this story. It is quite the fairy tale (cum-greek tragedy of the grandest form). You do a good story well, honeyluv. I didn’t miss the WHOLE thing - I remember getting you dressed in the trailer. You looked HOT in that 3 dolla rag! Nothing but legs and boobs and gleaming white smile! (Ok, the inevitable wit emerged later in the night… )

Oh, to be 26 and carefree again! (No more panty-points for this girl, I’m afraid. Although there may be web-based pictorial evidence of shirtlessness in Van-city last summer. But now I am a grown-up. Alas and alack!)

BTW, last night I confirmed my place on the upcoming pilgrimage to Ferg*s. Tagging along with an army of gNomes. If you and the Mister don’t have plans to go, you should concoct some: it is WAY past time you had some fun. I, in fact, would recommend that you make the journey sans companion. You don’t have to play. You know that the entertainments abound beyond the disc.

    I love you Twitch.
Alas, I cannot throw or run right now. Hubs is planning on the GB trip this summer but I’m on the fence. I’m sorry you’re a grow-up now. I hope it doesn’t hurt too much.

Maybe the Gnomes would welcome me once again into the fold.

What a great story. I’m sorry it had an unhappy ending, though. I was hoping that it would have ended with both of you going off into the sunset to settle down on some beachfront property! But memories are lovely, and I DID enjoy your story!

    Happy Birthday to Twitch!

Michele sent me, but I HAVE been here before. Come by and say hi when you get a chance. Lots of fun things going on over at my place! See you soon.
